Skokie, IL – Beginning in October, the Village of Skokie will be offering free wireless Internet access in outdoor public areas of the Downtown. As a part of a larger redevelopment project for Downtown, the wireless pilot program is called SkokieLink. This wireless connectivity will allow residents, students, visitors, and business users to access e-mails and search the Internet for information on laptops and PDAs while enjoying the outdoor public space. Four outdoor public spaces will have wireless Hot Spots available, making this the largest wireless downtown in suburban Chicago.
Columbia Telecommunications Corporation (CTC) served as the consultant and assisted the Village of Skokie in the design and implementation of the project. “The additional connectivity to the Internet and e-mail that the public and visitors in Skokie will enjoy in the very near future is exciting,” said Dr. Andrew Afflerbach, CTC Director of Engineering. “Downtown Skokie and SkokieLink will offer unique opportunities for gathering and working beyond the traditional indoor office or coffee shop.”
